2. Global Battery Standards & Cross-Reference
Battery standards determine physical dimensions, terminal positions, and performance test methods. Importers must match the standard to the vehicle fleet in their target market.
| Standard | Issuing Body | Primary Markets | CCA Test Method | Dimension System | Chengguang Range |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| JIS | Japanese Industrial Standards | Japan, Asia, Africa, Middle East, South America | JIS D5301 | Model-based (N40–N200) | 7 models |
| DIN | Deutsches Institut für Normung | Europe, North Africa, Middle East | EN 50342-1 | Capacity-based (DIN44–DIN100) | 7 models |
| BCI | Battery Council International | North America, Latin America | SAE J537 | Group numbers (24–31, 48–49) | Available on request |
| AS | Standards Australia | Australia, New Zealand | AS 2149 | Cross-references JIS/DIN | JIS cross-referenced |
| SA | SABS (South Africa) | Southern Africa | SANS 2 | Hybrid JIS/DIN | JIS+DIN cross-referenced |
Key insight for buyers: CCA values are not directly comparable across standards. A battery rated 500 CCA (SAE) will test approximately 470 CCA (EN) and 420 CCA (JIS) due to different test protocols. Always ask your supplier which standard their CCA ratings follow. For detailed cross-reference help, see our JIS vs DIN standards guide.
3. How to Read Battery Specifications
CCA (Cold Cranking Amps)
CCA measures the current (amperes) a fully charged battery can deliver for 30 seconds at −18°C (0°F) while maintaining voltage above 7.2V. Higher CCA = better cold-weather starting. Key considerations:
- For tropical markets: CCA is less critical; focus on capacity (Ah) and heat tolerance
- For cold/temperate markets: CCA is the primary selection criterion
- CCA degrades 30–40% over battery life. A new 600 CCA battery may deliver only 360–420 CCA after 3 years
- European vehicles with start-stop require minimum 600–700 CCA (EN) for reliable operation
Reserve Capacity (RC)
RC indicates how long (in minutes) a fully charged battery can deliver 25 amps at 27°C before voltage drops below 10.5V. This is your emergency buffer—critical for vehicles with high electrical loads or markets with frequent alternator failures.
Capacity (C20 / Ah)
The 20-hour capacity rating (C20) measures how much energy a battery can deliver over 20 hours at 25°C. For importers: a higher Ah rating means the battery supports more electrical accessories (air conditioning, infotainment, lighting) for longer engine-off periods.
| Rating | What It Measures | Typical Range (JIS N70) | Why Importers Should Care |
|---|---|---|---|
| CCA | Cold start power | 450 – 650 A | Critical for cold/temperate climate markets |
| RC | Emergency runtime without alternator | 80 – 130 min | Critical for developing markets with older vehicles |
| C20 (Ah) | Total energy storage capacity | 60 – 90 Ah | Critical for vehicles with extensive electronics/accessories |
4. Terminal Configurations
Terminal type and polarity are the most common causes of incorrect battery orders. Our products use the following terminal types:
| Terminal Code | Description | Positive Ø | Negative Ø | Used In |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | JIS standard large post | 14.7 mm (+) | 13.0 mm (−) | JIS batteries N50–N200 |
| D | JIS standard small post | 12.5 mm (+) | 11.0 mm (−) | JIS batteries N40–N50 |
| A (Euro) | European conical (T1) | 19.5 mm (+) | 17.9 mm (−) | DIN batteries all models |
Polarity / Layout
Polarity is defined by the positive terminal position when viewing the battery from the front (label facing you):
| Code | Positive Terminal Position | Common In |
|---|---|---|
| 0 / R | Right-hand side | JIS batteries (Japanese vehicles) |
| 1 / L | Left-hand side | DIN batteries (European vehicles) |
⚠️ Critical ordering note: Using a battery with incorrect polarity can cause severe electrical damage to a vehicle. Always confirm polarity before placing orders. If in doubt, send us photos of the original battery installed in representative vehicles—our technical team will identify the correct configuration.
5. Hold-Down Systems
| System | Type | Used In | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| B0 | Top frame clamp | JIS batteries | Metal bracket secures battery from the top edge. Requires matching vehicle tray with lip. |
| B13 | Bottom bracket | DIN batteries | Battery base has a protruding lip at the bottom. Vehicle tray has a clamp that grips this lip. Standard on all European vehicles. |
