Normas JIS y DIN para baterías: una guía completa para compradores internacionales de baterías

Why Battery Standards Matter for Your Import Business

Ordering the wrong battery standard can result in batteries that physically do not fit your customers’ vehicles. For OEM importers, getting the standard right is job one. This guide explains the major global battery standards, their differences, and how to build a standard-appropriate product lineup for your target market.

JIS Standard Deep Dive

JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) is the most widely used battery standard in developing markets. The numbering system is intuitive once you understand it:

JIS Numbering Decoded

  • “N” prefix: Standard terminal layout (negative on left, positive on right when facing terminals)
  • “NS” prefix: Slim/Narrow version with reversed terminals
  • Number after prefix: Larger number = larger physical size and higher capacity

DIN Standard Deep Dive

DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung) is the European standard. DIN batteries feature specific case dimensions and terminal configurations designed for European vehicle battery trays.

DIN Numbering System

  • First digits: Battery capacity class in Ah (e.g., DIN66 ≈ 66Ah)
  • Common range: DIN44 (smallest) to DIN100 (largest passenger vehicle battery)
  • Terminal type: Typically T1 (standard European conical) or T2 (slim European)
  • Bottom hold-down: B13 (standard DIN base clamp) is the most common

Practical Sourcing Tips

  1. Start with market research: What are the top 10 vehicle models in your target country? Cross-reference their OEM battery specifications.
  2. JIS is the safest starting point: If you are entering a developing market, JIS covers the broadest range of Japanese, Korean, and Chinese vehicle brands that dominate those markets.
  3. Many models cross-reference across standards: A JIS N70 battery and a DIN66 battery can often serve similar vehicle classes, though physical fitment differs. Always verify dimensions.
  4. Polarity matters: Left-positive vs right-positive terminal configurations are market-specific. Ordering the wrong polarity renders batteries unusable.
  5. CCA ratings differ by testing method: JIS CCA, DIN CCA, SAE CCA, and EN CCA are different tests that produce different numbers. A 500 CCA (SAE) rating ≠ 500 CCA (EN) rating.
